Team Rubicon Supporting Veterans After Service

I’m excited to be partnering with Team Rubicon to share both Carol’s story and about the work that Team Rubicon is doing to not only help those in need after natural disasters, but also as a way to help veterans. Carol joined the Army because she wanted to follow the career of a police officer she met. She wasn’t 21 so she couldn’t join the police force, but she could be an MP in the Army. So at 18 she joined the military and became an MP. Years later while going to school she learned about the work Team Rubicon was doing and has worked as a volunteer for over 15 years.

Team Rubicon Supporting Veterans After Service

Carol was able to join the Army and work as a Military Police officer. Most of her career was spent overseas in Germany. She loved being part of the Army and the career of Military Police. She even decided to stay in the military an additional tour. When she and her husband decided to start a family she knew she would have to leave the military. At the time, women who were married to service members couldn’t continue to serve. So, she left the military but was able to find a job in law enforcement. This made her transition out of the military easier, but it was still challenging emotionally.

Going back to school

In 2011, she decided to go back to school. She had already helped in a few natural disasters and it was through her interested she was connected to Team Rubicon. The more she learned about how they responded to disasters and the history of the organization the more she wanted to be involved. She began volunteering with them a year after first learning about them.

The mission and purpose

Team Rubicon is focused on helping those who face the challenges of a natural disaster. But they are also focused on helping the veterans who volunteer with the organization. From the beginning a tradition of a fireside chat that allows veterans space to talk about the trauma of the day has been key. It also allows for more healing to occur outside of just discussing the days events. The focus on the volunteers helps to build the family of Team Rubicon.
