Using Your Military Education Benefits

Dr. Sue Subocz shares how using the military education benefits she earned, enhanced her life and gave her opportunities after her career in the military ended. Sue served in the Coast Guard for 13 years and then served in the Coast Guard Reserve for another 13 years. She worked as a Civil Engineer on active duty and highlighted the different projects from her career. She transitioned into filling different careers in the Reserve including being a liaison. Today, Dr. Subocz has more than 20 years of experience in higher education, and has served in several leadership roles with Walden University since 2014.

Using Your Military Education Benefits

Sue decided to join the military for the education benefits. A guidance counselor helped her apply to Westpoint and then on his recommendation she also applied to the Coast Guard. She picked the Coast Guard so she could play sports. In the Coast Guard there were not a lot of degree options so she picked engineering. Eventually she landed in Civil Engineering, which became her career field.

Serving in the Coast Guard

She loved being part of the Coast Guard. She had so many opportunities to do different things and enjoyed her career. When she had children there was an opportunity to switch to the Reserve for two years with the possibility of switching back to active duty. That transition she discovered loving education. Leading her to decide to stay in the education career field while continuing her military career in the Reserve.

Using your Benefits

In the interview we highlighted the importance and great opportunity using your education benefits is. The military offers a number of education benefits. The GI Bill is one of the most popular but while you are on active duty you can use tuition assistance. There are also a number of different programs available through the VA that you can get a certificate of training to help your career. One option is going to school with Sabio School of Software Engineering through the VETTECH program. At the end of the bootcamp you are a trained software engineer and you don’t even have to use your GI Bill benefits to participate!
