Sometimes the military does not take care of the people who serve in the military and they end up leaving the military at 17 years. Lisa had a great experience and gained so much from her service. But when she had an allergic reaction to both of her anthrax vaccines she decided it was time to leave the military. Lisa left the military because she chose her family and her health over the military rules. It was a hard choice for her to say goodbye to the military. She had given so much and served for seventeen years. In the end, she left even without retirement and moved forward with her life.

Lisa’s story:
Lisa served in the National Guard, on Active Duty, and in the Reserves. She decided to join the National Guard because she came from a military family and needed a way to pay for college. The National Guard offered her that opportunity. She was planning to become a veterinarian but the career field disappeared and she was reassigned to public health. She began college with plans of being a veterinarian anyways but after one cat dissection, she realized it was not the right career for her.
Switching to active duty then Reserves
She decided to transition to active duty along with a friend. They both ended up in California but she went North and her friend was in Southern California. She deployed to England during Desert Storm and to Kenya/Somalia for Restore Hope. After ten years on active duty, she decided to transition to the Reserves. She was looking for more stability since her husband was in the Air Force as well and they wanted to start a family. She continued her service with the Reserves and started working as a massage therapist.
When she received the anthrax vaccine she had an allergic reaction. She still had to continue with the vaccination treatment and with the second vaccine had a more serve reaction. Both a military allergist and civilian allergist agreed she should not continue to receive the vaccine. Her leadership wanted her to get a third opinion. It was at that point she decided she had had enough and even though she had served 17 years she decided to leave the military behind.
