One of the things I really enjoy doing each year. Is going to the pumpkin patch at Tanaka Farms. The first year we lived here I tried to find something farm like in the city.
I know, why did I think I would find that in the city? But I did find a farm less than an hour away. Tanaka Farms is located in Irvine. We had so much fun at the Harvest Festival that we are planning to go back this year.
The annual Pumpkin Patch event at Tanaka Farms is a great place to pick up a pumpkin, check out the entertainment and explore the farm via a tractor ride. There are hay bails set out for seating and mazes, a scarecrow contest, a tractor for pictures, petting zoo, corn maze, harvest games, tractor wagon rides, pumpkin chunking and of course a huge selection of pumpkins to pick from. The pumpkin patch runs from late September until Halloween open daily from 9 am to 6 pm.
The Pumpkin Patch is probably the best and most popular event Tanaka Farms holds, but you can visit the farm throughout the year and even get vegetables throughout the year through their Community Sponsored Agriculture Program.
You can also do strawberry picking in the Spring. We love Strawberries so we decided to go to Tanaka Farms again. This time to pick strawberries. During the strawberry season they have a tour in conjunction with strawberry picking so we decide to do that.
We had a lot of fun touring the farm and trying some of the vegetables that they grow. They had us try carrots, celery, cilantro, onion and then we finally made it to the strawberry fields. And ate lots of strawberries as we picked them and filled up our basket. Strawberry picking was fun, but we likely won’t go back next year because it will be too hard with two boys under 4. Maybe in a few years we could go again.
Tanaka Farms has a few other events (melon picking, Christmas trees) throughout the year. The Farm is open year round for U-Pick veggies so no matter what time you visit the LA area you can head out to Tanaka Farms for a fun adventure.
